Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Horatio Alger Scholarship, students must:

• Be a U.S. citizen.

Application Process

Applying for the Horatio Alger Scholarship is completely free. The undergraduate scholarship application will open on December 1 and close on March 1. A single application will allow you to be considered for the full range of scholarships provided by the Horatio Alger Association. To be considered, your application and all required materials must be submitted online application by 12:00 p.m. E.T. on March 1.

Application Requirements

To confirm eligibility, applicants must submit various documents as part of their application:

• Academic Information: A high school counselor must fill out this section to verify academic details, including GPA, class rank, and coursework.

• Adversity Statement: This section requires applicants to describe in detail the challenges they have faced. Since the scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated resilience, it is crucial to clearly outline personal hardships and how they were overcome.

• Support Form: This document confirms the accuracy of the adversity statement. The provider of this form must be at least 21 years old and well-acquainted with the applicant’s circumstances. Suitable individuals include neighbors, family friends, teachers, counselors, pastors, or coaches.

• Proof of Citizenship: Applicants who were born outside the U.S. but are U.S. citizens must provide documentation such as a copy of their U.S. passport’s photo ID page, a citizenship certificate, or a parent’s citizenship certificate.

• Financial Information: Since applicants must come from families with an adjusted gross income of $55,000 or less, supporting financial documents must be provided, varying based on individual circumstances.
